In just a few days, the Jewish community will celebrate Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year.

We will hear the blasts of the shofar, eat sweet apples and honey, and gather in each other’s homes to give the gifts of renewal and hope. We will all share in the blessings of the year to come.

Ferd & Gladys Alpert Jewish Family Service honors the Rosh Hashanah holiday with acts of resolve and resilience and takes part in the Jewish value of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world) including:

  • Distributing baskets decorated by Apartment Program residents of the Melvin J. and Claire Levine Jewish Residential & Family Service (Levine JRFS), stocked with food from the Alpert JFS Kosher Food Pantry.
  • We hosted our first Eat & Schmooze event for Holocaust survivors in over two years. Survivors enjoyed music and a delicious lunch and dipped apples into honey in the hope of a sweet new year.
  • Delivering Rosh Hashanah meals to homebound seniors and Holocaust survivors in partnership with The Kind Kitchen and the Jewish Volunteer Center of the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County.
  • Residents of the Apartment Program of Melvin J. & Claire Levine Jewish Residential & Family Service spent time with volunteer Ilene Goldstein for a sweet treat. Ilene led the residents in baking Challah bread and an apple tasting. The activity served as a preview of the upcoming Rosh Hashanah holiday. Residents voted on their favorite type of apple. Golden Delicious was the unanimous winner!

May the sound of the shofar serve as an inspiration to us all to reflect on our lives and the year ahead, and to reaffirm our dedication to community, and collective responsibility, through deeds of charity and loving-kindness.

Thank you for making a difference and for strengthening our community.

Wishing you and your family a happy and healthy Rosh Hashanah,
